Southampton vs Arsenal Predictions
- Only Forest have claimed fewer home points than Southampton this term
- Arsenal have won 13 of their 14 games this season
- The Saints have scored in 19 of their last 21 home league games
- Southampton have conceded 21 goals across their last 11 home matches
Tough timing for Saints
Southampton have just started to turn things around, having claimed four points from their last two games. Following that up with a clash against league leaders Arsenal isn’t ideal for Ralph Hasenhuttl, especially with Premier League owners getting increasingly trigger-happy.
The Saints are still struggling this term despite their good week. The hosts have lost six of their 11 league games this term, while only bottom club Nottingham Forest have picked up fewer points at home than Southampton have at St Mary’s this term.
Gunners in fantastic form
Arsenal’s top-of-the-table clash with Man City was postponed in midweek, but the Gunners kept their good form going with a 1-0 win over PSV in the Europa League. The Gunners have now won 13 of 14 games in all competitions this term, while they have three straight 1-0 wins behind them coming into this clash.
Expect a higher-scoring clash in this one, with the visitors averaging two goals per away trip this term. They head to a Southampton side who have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 Premier League home games, conceding 21 times. having scored three times in three of their last four in the league, the Gunners should put on a show in this one.
The visitors have an in-form front four, including Bukayo Saka. The England international has more goal involvements than any other Gunner in the league this term, scoring four and assisting four. He’s scored in three of his last four matches including each of his last two league games, so back Saka to strike on Sunday.
Saints can get a goal
For all their issues, the hosts rarely draw a blank at their own ground. Over the last 12 months, they’ve found the net in 19 of their 21 home league games. The Saints have also scored in five of their last six home meetings with Arsenal, so back them to be a threat.
Arsenal have kept four clean sheets on the road but they’ve also conceded in every home game. Expect that trend to start evening out, given that the Gunners have kept four clean sheets in their last 20 league matches.
The visitors should be good for the points, but I’m also backing them to concede. The Gunners should prove too strong, but both teams have scored in four of the Saints’ five home games this term so I’m backing a 2-1 away win.
