Liverpool to Win and Under 3.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Southampton’s 5-0 hammering by Tottenham on Sunday prompted the sacking of Russell Martin but they have to pick themselves up quickly for this EFL Cup quarter-final with Liverpool. Saints have lost five of their last six games, though, and could lose a low-scoring battle at St Mary’s.

Liverpool 2-1

Reason for tip

Seven of Liverpool’s last 11 wins in all competitions have been by single-goal margins, so this could be cagey and a 2-1 win for the Reds is the way to go in the correct score betting.

Southampton vs Liverpool Predictions

  • Seven of Liverpool’s last 11 wins in all competitions have been by a single goal
  • Southampton have lost five of their last six contests
  • Liverpool have scored exactly two goals in three of their last five matches

Saints can keep things tight after Spurs mauling

Southampton’s 5-0 mauling by Tottenham on Sunday marked the end of Russell Martin’s time at the club but the players need to regroup quickly with an EFL Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on Wednesday.

And despite the disparity between these sides in the league, this may not be the thrashing many expect.

Saints came close to beating Liverpool in the league in November, establishing a 2-1 lead after 56 minutes but a second-half brace from Mo Salah turned the game on its head and they lost 3-2.

And while heavy defeats have not been rare for Southampton this season, they have not lost by large scorelines in succession and sandwiched between the 5-1 hammering by Chelsea and 5-0 defeat to Tottenham, they pushed Aston Villa close in a 1-0 loss.

Narrow win expected for Reds

The Reds have not been blowing teams away recently with four of their last five wins in all competitions producing under 3.5 goals and this could be closer than expected.

Arne Slot is likely to rotate personnel given the intensity of the December schedule – they have another three league games before the end of the year – so a low-scoring away win could be the way to go at St Mary’s.

In the correct score market, 2-1 to Liverpool is the best selection.
