Newcastle To Win To Nil

Reason for tip

Goals have been a real issue for Premier League basement club Southampton, who have failed to score in ten top-flight matches, and they could be shut out in defeat to European-chasing Newcastle at St Mary’s.

Newcastle 1-0

Reason for tip

Newcastle beat Southampton 1-0 back in August and there could be a repeat of that scoreline at St Mary’s. Southampton have lost by a single goal to the likes of Liverpool, West Ham and Nottingham Forest since December and Newcastle can win this by a narrow margin of victory.

Anthony Gordon To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Alexander Isak has earned plenty of plaudits at Newcastle this season but Anthony Gordon has also been in good form, scoring six times in this season’s Premier League. Back the former Everton man to net against Southampton.

Southampton vs Newcastle Predictions

  • Newcastle have won nine of their last ten matches in all competitions
  • Southampton have failed to score in ten Premier Leauge games this term
  • The Magpies have lost just one of their last 23 league games against promoted sides
  • Anthony Gordon has netted six goals in this season’s Premier Leauge

Magpies can bounce back from Bournemouth loss

Newcastle’s rapid ascent up the Premier League table came to an abrupt halt with defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday but they have a great chance to get back to winning ways against Southampton at St Mary’s.

The Magpies exploded into life in mid-December, stringing together nine consecutive wins in all competitions, beating the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal in that run.

As a result they secured passage to the fourth round of the FA Cup, put one foot in the EFL Cup final and propelled themselves into the Premier Leauge’s European positions.

But last Saturday the good mood around St James’ Park was somewhat extinguished in a 4-1 loss to Bournemouth, courtesy of a Justin Kluivert hat-trick.

It was a scintillating performance from the Cherries who were inventive and tenacious in attack and Eddie Howe will hope that defeat was a one-off and not a sign of things to come.

Newcastle’s form beforehand suggests it was indeed just an anomaly and they should be too strong for their next opponents Southampton, who have been bottom of the table since November.

Juric struggles to turn things around for Saints

Indeed, Saints have failed to win any of their last 12 league games, losing ten of them, and Ivan Juric has struggled to steady the ship since arriving in December.

A dearth of goals has been a real issue for Saints, who have scored just 15 goals in 22 league assignments, and a Newcastle win to nil could be the way to go.

As for a correct score, Southampton have limited damage in recent defeats, losing by a single goal against Liverpool, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest since mid-December and a 1-0 win for Newcastle appeals.

Gordon fancied to strike on south coast

That was the scoreline when these sides met back in August with ten-man Newcastle grinding out victory against the run of play and, while they have come a long way since then, this could also be a low-scoring matchup.

Alexander Isak’s scoring streak was snapped against Bournemouth and, while the Swedish striker could add to his tally on Saturday, Anthony Gordon is the better value bet to strike.

Gordon has been overshadowed by Isak this term but has scored six goals in the top flight and was on target in the team’s recent wins against Wolves in the Premier League, Bromley in the FA Cup and Arsenal in the EFL Cup.
