Euro 2024 final looms for Spain and England
After a month of action there are just two teams left at Euro 2024 as Spain take England in the final in Berlin on Sunday.
The Three Lions are looking for redemption after defeat to Italy in the 2020 final at Wembley, while Spain could claim a record fourth victory in the competition.
The England squad made history on Wednesday night as they reached back-to-back finals for the first time and also a first major final on foreign soil with their 2-1 win over the Netherlands.
Spain have had a tougher route to the final as they overcame host nation Germany in the last eight with a last gasp effort in extra time before seeing off France in the last four – thanks in part to a superb display from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal – and they go into the game as the deserved favourites.
Ultimately a La Roja win does seem the more likely scenario but the standout bet here is perhaps the odds-against price of 21/20 on offer for both teams to score, given the attacking talent these two heavyweights possess.
Both teams capable of scoring
Spain managed to navigate the group stages with three wins to nil but they have conceded exactly one goal in all of their knockout games, against Georgia, the Germans and Les Bleus.
It has been a similar story for England as they only let in one goal in their first three games but then played out 1-1 draws with Slovakia and Switzerland, winning in extra time and on penalties respectively, before a late Ollie Watkins goal in the semi-final against the Dutch saw them secure a 2-1 victory.
It is hard to see this lethal Spanish side drawing a blank as they have managed an impressive 13 goals in six games in Germany (12 in normal time) and they have threats in all areas with nine different scorers. England haven’t been quite as impressive with seven goals in total (six in normal time) from four different scorers, while Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have perhaps underwhelmed at times but they have still managed five goals between them.
Hard to ignore Spain’s form
England have undeniably grown into the tournament after a few underwhelming displays in the group stages and a fairly limp performance in the last 16 against Slovakia before they kicked into gear against the Swiss and raised their levels again in the last four.
They will need to raise their levels again to overcome Spain, who have looked like genuine contenders from the off as they overcame the likes of Croatia and Italy early on before breaking the host nation’s hearts and then dominating a star-studded French side, and Sunday’s final may prove to be just a step too far for England.
Spain have won five of their six games at Euro 2024 and they managed to avoid spot kicks against the Germans by grabbing a late winner. England have only won twice in 90 minutes and have played out four draws, with one knockout game going to penalties, so I’m siding with Spain in the correct score market and going for a 2-1 win for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
The Golden Boot battle will be decided after the final and England’s Kane and Spain’s Dani Olmo are among a group of six players locked on three goals apiece. Olmo looks the best bet for an anytime goal at the current prices as he has scored in every knockout round so far, although it wouldn’t be a surprise to see both on target in Berlin given Kane will be on penalty duties for Gareth Southgate’s side.
