SPAL vs Benevento Predictions
Benevento may already have been relegated from the Italian top flight, but they still have a role to play in the battle at the bottom. The visitors come to SPAL on Sunday, with the home side aiming to avoid the drop with a victory, following their recent push for survival. They’ve been avoiding defeat in a few of their recent games, but they’ve not won enough in that time, which has left them in danger ahead of the final few games of the Serie A season. Will SPAL take another step towards safety this week, or will they inch ahead with yet another draw?
Benevento’s last away trip saw them end a 16 game wait for a victory on the road, as they won 1-0 away to AC Milan. That impressive result was followed up with relegation a day later, but that didn’t slow down the Witches of the South. They drew 3-3 at home to Udinese in a fantastic game last time out, so they’re clearly still fighting on despite their fate being sealed. Will that continue in to this clash?
SPAL certainly can’t afford to rest ahead of this game, having seen Benevento’s recent results. The good news for the visitors is that impressive forward Cheick Diabaté will feature after his excellent recent impact in Serie A. They’ve scored in six of their last seven league matches ahead of this clash, while SPAL have conceded in 83% of their games in the league, so Diabaté and the Witches of the South should get plenty of joy going forward on Sunday, which could damage SPAL’s hopes of staying up.
While the visitors are coming off a clean sheet at San Siro, we don’t expect them to repeat that on Sunday. Benevento have conceded 81 goals so far – in a 20-team Serie A season, only three sides have shipped more goals: Venezia in 1949-50 (89), Legnano in 1951-52 (85) and Pescara in 2012-13 (84). They’ve conceded in every other away trip this season, so this doesn’t seem like a trend. We expect Benevento to struggle at the back yet again, having shipped 2.41 goals per game on the road.
SPAL have got a solid scoring record, and they have to come in to this one fired up as they push to secure a place in the top flight for next season. We see them conceding to a Benevento side who seem to just be pouring forward with nothing to lose, so while we can see the hosts winning this one, both teams to score seems like the best value bet on this clash in our eyes. On top of that, we’ve gone with a 2-1 home win as our correct score pick.
