Sporting Gijon vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
It was a jittery night at the Vicente Calderon in midweek as Atleti were taken all the way to penalties after a goalless 210 minutes against PSV in the Champions League. Some clinical finishes in the shoot-out helped see them through to a Quarter-Final with Barcelona. In the league they have been excellent of late, winning all of their last 4 matches and scoring 3 goals in all of the last 3, which is something of a rarity for the Madrid club who more commonly pick up lots of narrow victories. They are still 8 points behind the Catalans in the title rice but a return of 67 points from 29 games from Atleti is still an outstanding effort although the quality of Barcelona means they could win all their remaining matches and most likely still not win the title.
Sporting Gijon aren’t likely to be their biggest obstacle in the run-in and the side from Asturias come into this match following 4 successive defeats. Losses against fellow strugglers Granada and Espanyol have really dented their survival prospects and they are currently 19th and 3 points off safety. They’ve won only 2 of their last 16 in all competitions and not since the end of January when they picked up a surprise win at the Mestalla.
This game really looks like a nailed on away win. Atleti’s league form is as good as it has been all season while Sporting are in their worst patch of the season. Atletico have scored 9 times in their last 3 league games and are up against a Sporting Gijon side that have kept just 1 clean sheet in 21 matches and haven’t shut a team out at home in almost 5 months. Diego Simeone’s side have let in just 12 goals all season in the league, while Sporting Gijon have conceded 51 so backing Atletico Madrid -1.0 Asian Handicap at 1.925 looks really good here.
