Sporting Lisbon to Win

Reason for tip

Sporting Lisbon have won five games in a row while Lille have lost three games on the bounce, including their last Champions League away tie. Les Dogues’ record against Portugal’s big three in European competitions is P6 W0 D1 L5, which hardly inspires confidence.

Sporting Lisbon 2-0

Reason for tip

Sporting have scored at least two goals in all but two of their home games this year. Lille lost 2-1 away at Slavia Prague in the Champions League qualifiers last month and a similar outcome could be on the cards, despite Sporting’s solid defensive record. Lille scored at Fenerbahce, Reims and Slavia before drawing a blank at Saint Etienne, but the stats suggest they were worth a goal in that one too.

Lille could struggle in the Lions’ den

Sporting Lisbon have the momentum to put three points on the board when they entertain Lille in the League phase of the new-look Champions League on Tuesday evening.

Ruben Amorim’s side have begun the season in red-hot fashion with five consecutive victories following their sloppy Super Cup defeat to Porto.

The Lions wrought their revenge over the Dragons in the league last month with a 2-0 victory at the Alvalade – where they have not lost in more than 11 months. Atalanta, the eventual Europa League winners, were the last club to beat them on their own patch and this Lille side looks a far cry from the side that Gian Piero Gasperino took to Lisbon last October.

Les Dogues have lost three in a row

Bruno Genesio’s side have lost three consecutive matches with domestic defeats against PSG and Saint-Etienne following a 2-1 loss in Prague which was good enough to secure their passage to the League phase.

Slavia, who were well worth their 2-1 victory over the French club, are well organised but lack the genuine attacking threats that Amorim has at his disposal, such as in-form striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swede, who has scored 11 goals in his last seven games for club and country, looks a great bet to get on the scoresheet in what should be a solid opening to this European campaign for the Lions.
