Tottenham Hotspur and Both Teams To Score
Reasoning
Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton Predictions
- Tottenham won 13 of their 19 home league games last season.
- Spurs conceded in nine of their final 12 home games in all competitions.
- Both teams have scored in each of the last eight meetings.
- Son Heung-min has scored in five of his last six games against Saints.
Spurs looking for strong start
There is plenty of optimism surrounding Tottenham ahead of the new season as Antonio Conte prepares for his first full campaign in charge and they will be expected to take all three points when Southampton visit.
Spurs have made what look to be some good additions over the summer with Richarlison and Ivan Perisic among their new recruits.
Saints did win the corresponding fixture 3-2 last term but they ended the campaign with a six-game winless run, with five defeats, and have managed just one win in five attempts in pre-season.
Saints can get on the scoresheet
Tottenham should have the quality to win this game and their loss to Southampton at this ground last season was one of just five defeats, as they won 13 of their 19 home league games.
However, the hosts are too short to be of interest for the main bet so for better value a Spurs win with both teams to score looks a good option.
There have been goals at both ends in each of the last eight meetings between these two sides stretching back to 2016, and Saints only failed to score in one of their final five games last term despite losing four of those.
Spurs conceded in nine of their final 12 home assignments in all competitions last term, so backing the hosts to win with both teams to score stands out.
Spurs could make a statement
Southampton may have won at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in February, but that was the last of their three road wins in the Premier League last season.
They finished the campaign with a seven-game winless run away from home and conceded four goals in two of those fixtures.
Tottenham will be looking to hit the ground running and a bold 4-1 win for the hosts is the correct score selection.
Spurs scored nine goals across their final three games last term and have added firepower with Perisic and Richarlison on board, but I’m going for one of their long-serving attackers for my anytime scorer selection in the shape of Son Heung-min.
Son shared the Premier League top scorer award with Mohamed Salah last term with 23 goals. The South Korean tends to enjoy playing against Saints and has scored in five of his last six games against them – including a four-goal in a 5-2 win at St Mary’s in September 2020, so back him to terrorise their backline once again.
