Villarreal vs Bayern Munich Predictions
- Bayern Munich have scored over 100 goals in the Champions League since they last failed to score
- Villarreal have scored in seven of their eight Champions League games this term
- Nine of Bayern’s last 11 matches have seen both teams score
- Leroy Sane has scored in five of his last seven games in this competition
Villarreal out for another shock
Having taken out Italian giants Juventus in the last round, Villarreal are hoping they can prolong their European run when they meet Bayern Munich in the last eight. The reigning Europa League winners have European experience behind them, but is this a step too far?
Bayern look like one of Europe’s strongest sides this term and they breezed through in their last 16 tie. However, their slip up in the first leg could give Unai Emery some hope as he prepares for his first match at this stage of the competition.
How far can Bayern go?
It’s fair to say that Bayern have had an easy time of it in Europe so far, but they haven’t been faultless. The German giants landed Barcelona in their group, but a dismal display from the Catalans meant it was Benfica – who shipped nine goals in two clashes with Bayern – who were the biggest challengers to Julian Nagelsmann’s outfit.
The German champions landed Red Bull Salzburg in the last 16, cruising through 8-2 on aggregate despite trailing 1-0 in the first leg until the 90th minute. A 7-1 win at home in the second leg showed what Bayern are capable of. They’ve now scored 101 goals in the Champions League since they were last held to a clean sheet against Liverpool in February 2019.
However, a walkover win against Salzburg doesn’t mark out Bayern for glory. While they are heavy favourites once again, this clash is probably their biggest test of the campaign.
Sane to strike
Villarreal’s home record in this competition hasn’t been great this season. They’ve drawn with Atalanta and Juventus, losing to Man United and claiming their only win and clean sheet against Young Boys.
The Spanish side have scored in seven of their eight games in Europe this term but they haven’t been stellar defensively. Don’t expect them to hold off this Bayern side, who have scored in 24 straight games, racking up 30 goals in just eight matches in Europe.
A big part of Bayern’s success in Europe has been Leroy Sane, who has six goals and six assists in this competition so far. He’s scored in five of his last seven European games, so back the former Man City winger to strike.
The issue for Bayern is that four of their last five European games and nine of their last 11 matches overall have seen both teams score. Given that, I’m backing both teams to find the net in this one, while Bayern look good to capitalise on Villarreal’s poor home record in Europe with a 2-1 victory my correct score prediction.
