Wales vs Ukraine Predictions
- Wales have seen both teams score in their last five games
- The hosts have conceded in four successive home games
- Ukraine saw BTTS in 13 of their 18 games in 2021
- The Welsh haven’t lost at home since 2018
Two sides just 90 minutes from Qatar
The final European qualifier for the 2022 World Cup will be decided on Sunday as Ukraine head to Cardiff to meet Wales. The Ukrainians were able to produce a massive 3-1 win at Scotland in midweek to book their spot in the playoff final, but will their incredible journey continue?
As for Wales, they haven’t made the World Cup since 1958 and they know a meeting with England is on the cards this time around. This could be the last run for this generation of Welsh stars, but can they set up a dream finish in Qatar?
Ukraine bright but questions remain
The visitors raced into the lead against Scotland and never looked back, despite concerns over their conditioning. Many of Ukraine’s players have barely featured in 2022 with their domestic league suspended, which means playing two huge games in just five days is a tall order.
There’s obviously an incredible spirit among the Ukraine squad, but will that be enough to see them through? They may find things tougher against a Welsh side who are stronger than Scotland, while the hosts have been focused on this game for months.
Main event for Welsh
Wales were in Nations League action on Wednesday, but they rested key stars with an eye on this game. Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davies will all return for this one.
While Wales should get a boost up front, there are defensive concerns for the hosts. Each of their last five games have seen both teams score, while they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four at home – with BTTS landing in each of those.
Given that Ukraine scored three at Scotland, I see them getting at least one here. In their 18 games in 2021, BTTS landed 13 times. Goals look well priced in this game given the circumstances, so back both teams to score.
Returning Moore the value scorer
Kieffer Moore’s injury earlier this year looked set to keep him out of Bournemouth’s promotion run and Wales’ World Cup push. However, he returned for the final four games for the Cherries, scoring four times.
Moore has scored in two of his last three internationals and he produced a big goal against Switzerland in the Euros last summer. At a shade below 3/1, back Moore to find the net.
Moore should lead the hosts to victory, with home advantage crucial for the Welsh. They last lost at home in 2018, going 18 games without defeat. Back them to edge out Ukraine with a 2-1 victory.
