Swiss campaign opens with top-of-the-table clash

The 2022-23 Swiss Super League campaign begins with a blockbuster encounter on Saturday, as champions Zurich take on last season’s third-placed finishers Young Boys in a battle of last term’s two most potent attacks. While both trail Basel in the outright betting after changes of manager and the departures of key players, an entertaining early-season contest is certainly anticipated.

Young Boys – now managed by Basel’s 2017 double-winning boss Raphael Wicky – scored the most goals in the division last term, with 80 in 36 games, and saw each of their last 12 fixtures contain over 2.5 goals, with 11 featuring goals at both ends. Although last season’s top goalscorer Jordan Pefok has departed for Union Berlin, they’ve retained the 12-goal Wilfried Kanga and 11-goal Christian Fassnacht, so should be an entertaining watch once again.

Zurich, meanwhile, romped to their first league title since 2009 by a 14-point margin, though the losses of boss Andre Breitenreiter (to Hoffenheim) and 20-goal striker Assan Ceesay (to Leece) make them third favourites this time around. Their 78 goals last term was a tally only bettered by Young Boys, who they have already beaten 2-1 on two occasions in 2022. With both teams netting in eight of their last 10 games and over 2.5 goals coming in six of their last seven, they should play their part.

Entertaining affair likely once more

Seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings between this duo – all of which have taken place since September 2020 – have seen over 2.5 goals, and five contained goals at both ends. We’re backing both of those bets to win on the opening day when these Swiss giants meet.

Meanwhile, managerial changes and a plethora of exits make this a difficult contest to call, and a captivating 2-2 draw might represent a correct score punt with decent value.
