Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions
Bayern Munich were able to forget about their disappointing knockout from the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League against Athletico Madrid after they sealed themselves a record fourth consecutive Bundesliga title this season. This came as no surprise with Bayern Munich having yet another amazingly consistent Bundesliga campaign, standing at least four points clear at the top of the league since week seven. Coach Pep Guardiola has recorded a historic league record win percentage during his time at Bayern Munich (82 wins from 102 Bundesliga matches) and he’ll be hoping to say farewell in style with a victory against Dortmund, earning a seventh trophy for the club over three years at Bayern.
Borussia Dortmund finished runners up in the Bundesliga after their season-long mathematically improbable chase of Bayern Munich. Borussia Dortmund have at least secured themselves a chance of silverware by qualifying for this DFB Cup final against, none other than, the champions Bayern Munich. There is huge motivation here for both sides, not least because of the rivalry that has existed between the two giants in recent years. Between them, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have won the last six Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal in three of the last four seasons – Wolfsburg won the DFB Pokal in the 2014/2015 season beating Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund in the final.
Every final promises to be an engrossing affair, but in particular this DFB Pokal should provide some entertainment as not just two great rivals, but two of the best teams in Europe, face off. Borussia Dortmund certainly have the players, tactics and versatility to test Bayern Munich, however, the worry for Thomas Tuchel’s side is that they have not been in their “best” form as their Bundesliga campaign came to a close (W3 D1 L1) – notably a surprise 1-0 away defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt shook their confidence. Moreover, when Dortmund had the chance to really open up the title race with a win over Bayern in March, they appeared to lack the belief and conviction under pressure as they played out a goalless 0-0 draw.
Bayern Munich always play with conviction and seem just that bit more ruthless, making them favourites heading into this match. Bayern Munich are unbeaten in nine matches in the Bundesliga, winning seven and drawing two, and closed off their season with ease in dominating back-to-back wins. Bayern Munich have, however, conceded a goal in each of their last five matches across all competitions – Manuel Neuer being unable to add another clean sheet to his record season tally. To make matters worse for Borussia Dortmund, they haven’t beaten Bayern Munich in any of their last five meetings, a growing statistic that seems increasingly hard for them to overcome as Bayern Munich continue to strengthen and dominate German football – the last time Borussia Dortmund defeated Bayern Munich was a 2-0 win in the DFL Super Cup just before the start of the 2014/2015 season. Combining that analysis with the head-to-head and statistics below, we expect Bayern Munich to claim their seventh trophy under Pep Guardiola, with Bayern Munich to win at 10/11 (within 90 minutes) to be the safe bet. Bayern Munich to win 2-1 at 15/2 also seems a top value correct score bet for this match.
