Liverpool vs Newcastle Predictions
- Liverpool have won by two clear goals in six of their seven home league wins
- Newcastle have lost 22 of their last 27 league visits to Anfield
- The visitors have lost four of their last five in the league, shipping 11 goals
Injury-hit Magpies to struggle
The first Premier League game of 2024 sees Newcastle head to Anfield on the back of four defeats in five league matches. The Magpies are carrying a lengthy injury list which has made rotation hard through a busy December. As they wait for players to return, things could go from bad to worse in the New Year.
Eddie Howe’s side head to Anfield with nine players ruled out. They meet a Liverpool side who went into the weekend top of the table. Jurgen Klopp’s side have been fantastic at home so far this term and they head into this one as short-priced favourites to secure all three points.
Another home win for Reds
Newcastle have a terrible record at Anfield, losing each of their last five visits. In fact, Newcastle have won none of their last 27 Premier League away games against Liverpool (D5 L22). The Magpies come into this having won just one of their last 11 Premier League away games. The visitors have lost four straight league trips and another looms here.
Liverpool have won seven of their nine home games in the league this term and they’ve scored 41 times across their 14 matches at Anfield in all competitions. Klopp’s side have won by two clear goals in six of their seven Premier League home wins and with Newcastle coming off the back of a 3-1 home loss to Nottingham Forest, the hosts should be good to cover a -1 handicap.
Nunez to strike again
Darwin Nunez got a morale boost in Liverpool’s final game of 2023, scoring the opener against Burnley. The forward has scored three times across his last two meetings with Newcastle, including a brace in a comeback win at St James’ Park earlier this term.
Nunez is getting on the end of plenty of chances this term and having returned to scoring form, he is a good option to strike against a Newcastle defence which is struggling. The visitors have conceded twice or more in five of their last six league trips, while they conceded three goals to Chris Wood in their last outing. Nunez’s frame and movement should trouble a Newcastle backline which looks tired, so back him to find the net on Monday.
