Liverpool vs Wolverhampton Predictions
- Wolves have lost 18 of their last 20 trips to Liverpool in the league
- The visitors have scored just five times across their last 17 visits to Anfield
- Wolves have lost six of nine matches away to teams outside the bottom three
Reds searching for boost
Given that their last game at Anfield was a 5-2 drubbing by Real Madrid, Liverpool head into their midweek clash with Wolves hoping for a boost. Their return to league action at the weekend brought a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, so this has been far from an ideal Premier League campaign with the Reds sat in seventh.
However, there have been signs of life from Jurgen Klopp’s side in recent weeks and a win in midweek could put them back in European contention. The hosts have moved within five points of fifth-placed Newcastle and they’d be just six points shy of fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand if they can add to a fine record against Wolves.
Tough test for visitors
Wolves thumped Liverpool 3-0 last month and they head to Liverpool with a three-point cushion over the drop zone, but this isn’t a happy hunting ground for them. Liverpool have won 18 of their last 20 home league games against Wolves, including each of their last four meetings at this ground.
Wolves have not scored more than once in any of their last 17 league visits to Anfield, finding the net only five times during that run. While they’ve improved slightly under Julen Lopetegui’s watch, they are still scoring just over a goal per game. They’ve been beaten to nil on five occasions by the top four and could draw a blank again against a side with ambitions of forcing their way into the Champions League picture.
Back Reds to hold firm
Liverpool have kept three consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time this season, with that Real defeat looking like a blip in an improved run. The hosts have conceded just 0.82 goals per game at Anfield in the league this term. With their scoring slowing down of late, Klopp is likely to put extra focus on a defence which is now back to full strength.
The Reds have faced just five shots on target in those three matches, four of which were against Newcastle. Given that Wolves are converting just 6% of their chances on the road, it’s hard to see them finding the net on Wednesday.
The visitors have lost six of nine away games against teams outside the bottom three, so back Liverpool to claim a win to nil. However, they’ve failed to score in four league games so far in 2023, twice as many as in the whole of 2022. Given that, back a narrow 1-0 victory for the Reds.
