Newcastle vs Manchester United Predictions
- Newcastle have won six of their seven home league games this term
- Man United have lost all four meetings with teams in the top-half
- Newcastle won 3-0 at Old Trafford last month
- The Magpies have won seven of their last eight home games in all competitions
Newcastle robbed of famous victory
A terrible VAR call saw Newcastle concede a late penalty in a 1-1 draw at PSG on Tuesday, robbing them of a famous win over the French champions. That also prevented them from heading into Saturday’s match on the back of two impressive victories, after crushing Chelsea 4-1 last Saturday.
Newcastle’s loss could be our gain, as they’d likely be a lot shorter for the win here had they seen off PSG. As it stands, the hosts are a shade under evens for a home win this weekend, despite winning six of their seven home games so far this term. The hosts have won all but one of their last eight at home in all competitions, so there’s little doubt that they’re favourites for this encounter.
Can United’s away run match the Magpies?
Manchester United seemingly come into this one on a roll if you look at their Premier League form. The Red Devils have won five of their last six in the league, alongside a run of four consecutive victories on their travels.
However, those results are hiding United’s real issues. Not only did they suffer another collapse in their 3-3 draw with Galatasaray on Wednesday, but their league results aren’t as positive as they seem on paper. They may have eight wins from 13 games, but each of those wins were against bottom-half teams.
United’s recent away run saw them win at Fulham and each of the current bottom three, which isn’t form that should be extended this week. The visitors have lost all four of their meetings with sides in the top-half this term and with Newcastle impressing at home, they should follow up their 3-0 at Old Trafford last month with another comfortable win.
Gordon proving vital for hosts
One man to watch in this contest is Anthony Gordon, who has really clicked this term after his January arrival from Everton. The winger has chipped in with five Premier League goals this term, making him their highest scorer outside of Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.
Gordon has been a great foil for either of those two players, especially at home. The former Everton man has scored four of his five league goals at St James’ Park, while he has struck in their last three home league games. Following that fine run, back him for a strike on Saturday.
