Things are starting to click on Tyneside
It’s been an up-and-down season for Newcastle, but they return from the international break under the lights on Monday night as they look to extend a three-game winning run.
Eddie Howe’s side made a bright start with early points on the board, but their performances were underwhelming. As their displays improved, goals and points dried up thanks to some injury issues.
Now the Magpies finally seem to be clicking, having won three straight games. While they look like an outfit that could struggle with inconsistency this term, a home clash with a flailing West Ham side is the perfect chance for Newcastle to extend this rich run of form.
Hammers look vulnerable
West Ham drew 0-0 at home to Everton before the international break and they head into the weekend in 14th place in the table. Julen Lopetegui seems to be under significant pressure after a slow start, with the Hammers failing to match up with the top sides in the division.
The visitors have lost five of their six clashes with the top 10, drawing the other against Fulham. Lopetegui’s side have been thumped in visits to Liverpool, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest across their last four trips, with huge gaps in midfield and a lack of pace proving their downfall.
Newcastle to prove too strong
Newcastle have won three of their last four home games to nil and the Magpies are worthy favourites to see off the Hammers. The angle here is to back the hosts to win a low-scoring clash, as none of Newcastle’s home games this term have featured more than three goals.
While West Ham have been comfortably beaten, they encounter a Newcastle side who have struck 13 goals across 11 matches this term, including five in five at home. On the flip side, the Magpies have conceded only three goals across seven home matches in all competitions, so expect them to keep the score down on both ends. The Hammers’ league games have seen 2.91 goals scored per game, so back them to lose with under 3.5 goals to be scored.
With goals at a premium, Alexander Isak is likely to be crucial for the hosts. The Swede was on target during the international break, meaning he’s netted in five of his last six matches for club and country. In addition, Isak has a fantastic record against West Ham, netting five goals across their last three meetings, including a home and away brace last season. Having scored in four straight games for the Magpies, he’s a great option to find the net.
