Strugglers host champions

Sampdoria and Milan could hardly be in more contrasting veins of form; Marco Giampaolo’s hosts are winless after five matches of the Serie A campaign, scoring just two goals, while the Rossoneri – Giampaolo’s former club – are unbeaten and in confident mood after seeing off Scudetto rivals Inter last week. If the formbook is anything to go by, the Rossoneri should enjoy Saturday’s meeting.

Milan have claimed 11 points from their first five Serie A outings, and four points from clashes with Inter and Atalanta – as well as Tuesday’s Champions League draw at Salzburg – suggests they have the mettle for another title bid. Sampdoria, then, may not test their illustrious visitors after struggling for goals this term. No Serie A team has scored fewer than them since the season began, and only Spezia (eight) have managed less than their woeful tally of 13 shots on target. Samp’s 0.03 goal to shot ratio, meanwhile, is the worst such figure in Serie A this season, and they have fired a blank on two of their last three home outings.

Milan set for routine outing

Given their excellent defensive form and their opponents’ shortcomings, backing Milan to win to nil appears the obvious play for those searching for value on Saturday.
