Tottenham Hotspur vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Tottenham Hotspur kicked their International Champions Cup campaign off against Juventus on Tuesday, but early goals from Paulo Dybala and Medhi Benatia had them on the ropes inside 15 minutes. The rest of the game was relatively uneventful as far as goalmouth action is concerned, but eventually Spurs did manage to get themselves off the mark with a 67th minute Erik Lamela goal after an all round good performance from him.

This friendly saw two new Tottenham Hotspur faces in action for the first time, with midfielder Victor Wanyama and striker Vincent Janssen both pulling on the shirt for the first time. Their debuts went by without a hitch, although neither lit the game up.

This defeat made it five games without a win for Spurs after their late collapse in the Premier League title race, and Mauricio Pocchettino will be desperate to get a win under their belts before the Premier League starts up again in a few weeks time.

Atletico Madrid suffered their own disappointment at the end of last season. They reached the Champions League Final again, but once again faced the task of having to overcome the mighty Real Madrid. They did fair better this time, making it through extra time without collapsing like last time, but winning the penalty shootout proved a step too far.

This will be their first International Champions Cup game, but they did kick off their pre-season preparations last weekend with a 2-0 win over Numancia back in Spain.

Diego Simeone has brought an incredibly strong squad along for this competition, with the only big names missing out being Koke, Antoine Griezmann, Juanfran, and Yannick Carrasco after their Euro 2016 efforts. This leaves the likes of Diego Godin, Fernando Torres, Saul, Tiago, and Jan Oblak present and correct though, so they almost certainly have the strongest squad of the Australian edition of the ICC.

This strong squad, Simeone’s overall desire to win everything, and simply the fact that Atletico Madrid are an excellent team makes odds of 19/20 for an Atletico Madrid Win look very good value, so that’s what I’m backing alongside a 2-0 correct score prediction at 9/1.
